Inside a cell: an interactive 3D cell biology lesson
Simbiotiks is a free biology education resource for undergraduate students. This page is a 3D model of a skin fibroblast, the animal cell that builds the dermis, that you explore in your browser. Click an organelle to read about it at three depths (Beginner, Medium, Advanced, with the papers behind the advanced text), then dive inside it.
Inside the cell: the nucleus (nucleolus, chromatin, nuclear pores, lamina and envelope), mitochondria, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, vesicles, the cytoskeleton and the centrosome. Other cells on the title screen: a red blood cell, a plant cell, a neuron, heart muscle, skin dermis and a slab of skin, linked up a scale ladder to the human body. Also: inside E. coli, a bacterium.
